the right light: all fixtures are not created equal

  • Wednesday, October 31, 2012

  • When I heard of a Brooklyn design studio making contemporary light pendants inspired by the energy forces of the cosmos and tension/compression structures (like that of the Brooklyn Bridge), I was intrigued. The concept seemed a little “airy-fairy”, but interesting nonetheless.

The fixtures I’m describing are those by industrial designer Patrick Townsend.  His design studio in Long Island City - a stone’s throw away from The UN headquarters over the East River - by coincidence was once a light bulb factory.  Today, Townsend specializes in furniture and specialty lighting.

His Superstring Series of fixtures are fantastic.  They do the trick (light up a space) and yet they are light and airy, delicate and whimsical. Perhaps not appropriate for every interior, good golly miss molly they’d add some freshness to many a modern space.
