Known for his Exhibitions “100 Chairs in 100 days” of 2007
and “7 Chairs in 7 Days” of 2010, (some
examples above) Italian-born but London-based, artist/designer Martino Gamper
(b. 1971) is one master recycler, incorporating into his reconfigurations
anything from discarded chairs off the streets to authentic Italian classics by
Carlo Mollino and Gio Ponti.
And although it seems that much of his work is more artistic
than practical, this rising designer also produces beautiful and functional
pieces for the likes of Moroso (green bergère) and Nilufar Unlimited. For Nilufar he produced the Postmondus chair below, a
reinterpretation of the mid-19th century Thonet chair no. 16 that
unlike many of today’s “re-interpretations” of classics by other designers is
truly an excellent and unique piece that one could see Michael Thonet himself
embracing.
Gamper also builds some funky and radical looking casegoods with
mdf and laminate. Some of my favorites
are the desk and chest (below). Can’t
you just see these pieces included in super spaces designed by David Collins or
Peter Marino?
