Paula Hayes: urban gardens

  • Back in the winter of 2010, I happen to be at The MoMA marveling at an installation by New York-based artist and landscape designer Paula Hayes

She had installed a biomorphic-shaped container on one of the walls in the entrance hallway of the Museum and carefully filled-it with amazing tiny tropical plants and ferns.  It was wonderful!  At the time I remember thinking how fabulous it was to be in the dead of a New York winter and be able to enjoy art and greenery in the indoors.

Since then, her name has appeared on my radar a number of times.  For one, she has become the “gardenista” du jour of the art world, creating private city oases "in the sky" for a number of high profile clients like art dealer Marianne Boesky and architect Rafael Viñoly.  For those without an outdoor space - like me - she creates, with the meticulous eye of a Zen gardener, equally artistic terrariums (top and bottom images) encouraging their owners to tend to these Lilliputian environments as they would a larger garden.

I LOVE these terrariums because they combine a beautiful, yet inanimate, artistic hand-blown glass vessel with the animate art of nature … and for an art and nature lover like myself little could be better!
