Arne Jacobsen’s Futuristic “Drop” Chair

  • Monday, January 30, 2012
  • Of all the different Jacobsen chairs, this is one that has not been “saved” from its past and fabricated as a re-issue. Phew!!!!

This futuristic and minimalist chair has been in the forefront of my mind since I saw one last Fall.  It was designed in 1958 and produced by Fritz Hansen exclusively for the rooms and bar at the SAS Royal Hotel in Copenhagen.  About 40 pieces were made for the bar, all upholstered in leather, while others covered in fabric were made for the 275 rooms of the hotel. It is perhaps because these particular chairs were designed exclusively for the hotel that they have not been manufactured and tarted up for contemporary use … a brilliant though perhaps unintended move by Jacobsen to keep the prices for these precious drops in their ascent.
